Updated Playoff Picture

Despite the win against the Rams on Sunday, the playoff chances for the Seahawks took a major hit over the weekend. Of the 4 teams the Seahawks are chasing for the last playoff spot, only the Bears lost. Seattle will officially pass the Bears with a win on Sunday, but that only moves the Seahawks into 8th. The Seahawks must pass 2 more teams to get in. Needless to say the Seahawks only make it if they win out.

Of the Giants and Cowboys, one of those 2 is guaranteed to end up with no more than 9 wins. They play each other in week 17, so they can’t both end up with 10 wins. Of the 2 Seattle owns the tiebreaker with the Giants and not with the Cowboys, so the Seahawks need the Cowboys to win their division.

With Atlanta winning last night, Seattle’s best hope to pass another team is for the Lions to lose 2 out of their last week games. If that happens, Seattle will end up holding the tiebreaker with the Lions as well and end up with the #6 seed.

It should also be noted that the Seahawks will end up holding all of 3+ team tiebreakers, so that isn’t a concern. The only situation in which the Seahawks lose in a multi team tiebreaker scenario is if the Seahawks end up tied with only the Falcons and the Cowboys.

At this point, it doesn’t look good even if the Seahawks do win their final three games. They still need a lot of help if they are to make it into the playoffs.

This is exactly why my enthusiasm and optimism have been extremely tempered the past month. And the other reason is that I’m not convinced finishing 9-7 is a slam-dunk by any means. Chicago is hurting, but it’s a road game two time zones away. I think the ‘Hawks will win, but not enough that I’d bet a ton of money. SF is a home game, but the 49ers aren’t 10-3 by accident. And Arizona has played well of late.

@Sammy I personally don’t believe that any of the 3 games will be easy for the Seahawks. And even if they win out and end up 9-7, they still need help.

Still, the fact that we’re even talking bout playoffs at all is a good sign considering this team started 2-6. I feel this team has really turned a corner and is on the up-swing. It gives me hope going into the off-season.
