Matt Hasselbeck Returning to CenturyLink

I don’t normally care much about pre-season opponents. The games are pretty meaningless except for the 30 or so guys who are fighting for the past few roster spots. It never really matters who is lining up on the other side of the line of scrimmage.

I’m also not one to make a big deal about ex-Seahawks returning with another team. Sure, some of them can be fun, like booing Josh Brown after he refused to be the “slave to the businessman” and bolted to the Rams. That was entertaining, but few other times have I ever cared.

Mostly its because I cheer for the Seahawks. I like the players, but players come and go. The Seahawks are my team, and thats not going to chance just because players or coaches do.

I feel a bit differently about Matt Hasselbeck returning the week of August 9th (actual date not set yet) with the Titans. Matt is clearly the best QB this franchise has ever seen, and I don’t think it’s all that close. Matt also didn’t leave by his own choosing, so there’s no reason for any Seahawk fan to have any ill-will agaisnt him.

Instead, I expect the 12th Man to give him a very long standing ovation when he’s introduced pre-game, because he deserves it. I also expect the 12th Man to make it impossible for him to call an audible, and to force his line to commit a ton of false starts, because that’s what we do.

In the end, when Matt finally decides to hang up his cleats for good, I want him to do it as a Seahawk. Sign him to a 1 day contract and let him retire as a member of the team that will shortly after put his name up on the ring of honor.
