It looks like the 12th Man gets to prove that we are, in fact, the best fans in the world. Everyone knows that we’re the loudest fans in the NFL, but now we get to show that we’re the loudest fans anywhere.

This has been making the rounds on the internet recently, but it took some work to track to the authenticity of the story. Luckily it turns out to be true. representatives from Guinness will be on hand for the Seahawks home opener to see if we can break the world record for the loudest fans at any sporting event.

This attempt at the record does not have it’s genesis with the team itself. Instead, a group know as Volume12 were the ones who petitioned Guinness for the chance to break the record.

The current record belongs to Istanbul, Turkey and the Turk Telecom Arena. A soccer match between Galatasaray SC and Fenerbahce SC saw the crowd reach a decibel level of 131.76. That crazy loud, but I think we can be louder.

According to the team’s website, the loudest we’ve ever been is only 112 decibles. I find that difficult to believe. I’ve been to games where the noise has been considerably louder than that. Somehow I think the fact that the “record” ends in 12 isn’t coincidental.

Apparently that record was set during the 2005 NFC championship game. Funny, I seem to remember the 12s present at a more recent game causing an Earthquake. Perhaps the team’s historian simply missed that game.
