Dan Quinn Brings Assistant O-Line Coach Chris Morgan to Falcons

We’ve known for a couple of weeks now that Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn was taking the Atlanta Falcons head coaching job after the Super Bowl.

What we didn’t know, was that Quinn was allowed to bring one other coach with him from the Seattle Seahawks staff. That extra coach is Chris Morgan, who has served as an assistant offensive line coach for the past season. It was his only season with Seattle, after spending two years with the Oakland Raiders and three more with the Washington Redskins.

It’s somewhat interesting that a defensive coordinator would bring an offensive coach, let alone an assistant with him to the Atlanta Falcons. It is worth noting that the Falcons new offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, worked with Morgan when they were with the Redskins.

Since Morgan worked beneath Tom Cable, both Seattle’s assistant head coach and O-line coach, it is expected that the Falcons will be installing a zone blocking scheme for their offensive line for the upcoming season.

An interesting note on Quinn and the staff he’ll be working with in Atlanta.

Why not hire as many coaches as possible? The higher the ratio of coaches to players, the more likely backups are to learn every nuance of the system and be prepared to play when the next man up is needed. This system has worked beautifully with the Seahawks and it’s shocking more teams don’t have the same mentality.

Notes:

*The Seahawks landed at SeaTac airport around 3:30pm and were greeted by a few hundred fans. The welcoming was invite only, with family members of airline employees being the only ones allowed to attend.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was one of the first people off of the plane and went straight to the fans to shake hands and thank them for attending. Quarterback Russell Wilson waved after deplaning, put his belonging on the bus and came out to meet with fans for a few seconds as well.

Lastly, John Schneider came over and signed an autograph or two before boarding the bus right before they departed for the teams facility.

* The Seahawks do not plan to hold a ceremony of any kind but the City of Seattle may be holding a parade or celebration of some sorts to acknowledge the amazing Super Bowl season that the 2014 squad had.
