Why haven’t the Seahawks signed center Stefen Wisniewski?

The top remaining free agent center in the NFL remains unsigned although he’s had visits with multiple teams over the past few weeks. Why?

The Oakland Raiders have let their starting center, Stefen Wisniewski, leave via free agency after signing away Rodney Hudson from their AFC West division rivals – the Kansas City Chiefs.

With Max Unger’s departure in the Jimmy Graham trade, the Seahawks created a new need along their offensive line. The front office attempted to remedy that when they brought Wisniewski in for a visit a couple of weeks ago.

He’s had reported visits with the Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers thus far and has drawn interest from multiple other teams, but has yet to sign with anyone.

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune is reporting (subscription required) that Wisniewski suffered a torn labrum injury at some point last season. That is the likely case as to why the center hasn’t come to terms with a new team this far into the NFL’s free agency period.

After looking for a contract with an annual value in the $4 million range, it’s now likely that he’ll have to settle for a one or two-year “prove it” deal that the Seahawks are pretty well-known for coveting.

If everything works out in the Seahawks’ favor – Wisniewski passing a physical as well as lowering his demands – the Seahawks could find themselves with a solid center for less than market value.

Although it would be wise to add an experienced starter, the Seahawks have Patrick Lewis on the roster. He filled in quite well last season when Unger went down with an injury for much of the year.

What do you think of Stefen Wisniewski? Should the Seattle Seahawks continue to pursue the free agent?
