Report: center Samson Satele to visit Seattle Seahawks

According to Adam Caplan, the Seattle Seahawks are bringing in veteran center Samson Satele for a visit today. Satele spent last season with the Miami Dolphins.

Satele, who will turn 31 in November, is a journey veteran who always seems to work his way into the starting lineup. The Dolphins brought him in last year to help provide some stability on a line that was full of young players.

Tom Cable is no stranger to Satele. The center played for Cable in Oakland. This means that the player should have no problem acclimating to Seattle’s zone blocking scheme if he happens to sign here.

How he fits with the Seahawks though is an interesting question. Satele last played guard in college. He’s a center, and there is no guarantee that moving him to guard will be a successful transition.

The Seahawks brought in guard Evan Mathis on Saturday to possibly help at LG. His asking price has proven to be too high, but it is clear that LG, and not center, is where the Seahawks are looking to find an upgrade.

One possibility is that the Seahawks would move Drew Nowak from center to LG to make room for Satele. Nowak is a physically gifted lineman, but this is his first year as a center.

Pete Carroll has said that he’s a bit behind on getting all the line calls correct. Moving him back to guard should benefit Nowak.

It is also possible that this is a leverage play for the Seahawks. If the Seahawks have other options, than Mathis won’t be able to demand such a high price. Of course, Mathis has other options too, which is why his asking price is so high.

The lesson here is that the Seahawks are clearly unhappy with the state of their offensive line. They’re looking for help there, which means that they do not believe their current players are sufficient at this time.
