Seahawks enter offseason with 9 draft picks

The Seattle Seahawks should have nine draft picks this year for John Schneider to play with.

Every team is given seven picks, one in each round. (Except for New England, which lost their first rounder for deflating footballs). The Seahawks have subtracted two, and then added four to that total.

The draft order remains the same for each odd numbered round. In even numbered rounds, the order is reversed for teams with the same record. So Seattle picks 26th in odd numbered rounds, and 28th in even numbered rounds.

Of course, that is just for the native picks for each team. The Seahawks have made a number of moves that will adjust their draft position:

  • The Seahawks traded away their 5th-round pick for Kelcie McCray.
  • Seattle traded away their 6th-round pick for Mohammed Seisey.
  • Dallas gave up their 7th round pick to Seattle for Christine Michael.
  • The Seahawks also traded Kevin Norwood to Carolina, but the draft pick they got in return was from the 2017 draft.
  • The Seahawks should also receive three compensatory picks from losing free agents last year. OTC projects them to be one pick each at the end of the 3rd, 5th, and 6th rounds.

That last point is an interesting one, and one that we won’t for for sure until comp picks are announced by the league at the the NFL combine.

It is possible that the 6th round could become a 7th if the league decides to cancel out contracts differently. It is also possible that the Seahawks could get another seventh round from O’Brien Schofield. Both of those scenarios seem unlikely.

That leaves the Seahawks nine picks, coming in rounds 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 7. With a general manager like John Schneider that’s a lot of ammunition to help reload this roster.
