The Seahawks traded up in the 5th round to select Maryland DT Quinton Jefferson.

Maybe it was just too much for Seahawks GM John Schneider to sit and watch all the other GM’s have so much fun. After trading away their fourth round pick yesterday to move up in the second and take Alabama DT Jarran Reed, Schneider had to sit for nearly two hours without making a selection. That was until he sent two draft picks to New England to move up in the 5th and take Jefferson.

MEASURABLES:

  • Height: 6’4″
  • Weight: 291
  • Arm Length: 33 3/8″
  • 40 time: 4.95
  • Vertical Jump: 29
  • Bench Press: 24

More from Seattle Seahawks Draft

HOW HE FITS WITH THE SEAHAWKS:

Think former Seahawk Clinton McDonald. Jefferson’s game is all about being quick off the ball, penetrating gaps, and getting in the backfield. While 2nd round pick Reed was drafted for his block-eating and run-stuffing prowess, Jefferson is being brought in to get to the quarterback.

He’s the kind of penetrating DT the Hawks haven’t really had since McDonald left after the 2014 season. He will be a sub package rotational player on passing downs and should have a chance to contribute as a rookie.

He clearly fills a need, as a couple of us on the staff here at 12th Man Rising were discussing late last night:

Good call David.

Jefferson is also a great story off the field. He’s married with three kids, including twins. That 5th round salary should come in handy.
