It appears the Seattle Seahawks are set to cut former starting center Patrick Lewis when teams have to trim their rosters down to 75 players tomorrow.

Last year, Patrick Lewis was a savior or sorts.

This year he appears to be out of a job.

In his Seahawks Insider column, The New Tribune’s Greg Bell speculates that Lewis could be released by the team tomorrow.

On it’s surface it makes sense. The 25 year old Lewis is set to count $1.6 million against the teams salary cap this year, but has lost his starting job to Justin Britt. Britt, a former 2nd round pick who failed at both right tackle and left guard before the move, has apparently found a home. He’s been excellent throughout the preseason and is clearly entrenched now as the first team pivot.

Beyond that, Lewis appeared to slip to third team last year when rookie 6th round draft pick Joey Hunt entered the game against Dallas before him.

Hunt’s been good. So good that Pro Football Focus has him graded as the top rookie at his position this preseason:

If Lewis had some position versatility he might stick around. But younger, cheaper players such as Will Pericak, Terry Poole and rookie Rees Odhiambo can play multiple positions. Pericak can play center, and is eligible for the practice squad should the team choose not to keep on on the final 53 man roster.

If it happens, it would be quite a fall for Lewis, who helped stabilize the offensive line after a terrible start to the 2015 season. Defensive line convert Drew Nowak was the Seahawks starting center for the first six games last year, an experiment that never gained any traction. Once Lewis took over the position, line play improved overall and Nowak was released.

Now it looks like Lewis may be the one looking for work with another team.
