According to multiple reports, Brandon Browner is no longer with the Seattle Seahawks. The fan favorite hoped to return as a safety, but it didn’t work out.

One of the founding members of the Legion of Boom is leaving, again. Reports are coming out todays say that Brandon Browner has been informed that he will be cut on Tuesday when the team must reduce their roster from 90 to 75.

The reports are everywhere, and I have no idea who to attribute in terms of breaking the story first. I first read that it was definitive (and not just that Browner “may” get cut) from Greg Bell of the TNT.

"Seattle is going to cut him when it announces its 15 roster moves Tuesday to get down to 75 players by the league deadline. That became apparent Sunday and Monday when he was nowhere to be seen during practices at team headquarters."

Browner departure isn’t much of a surprise. The safety/linebacker role the team envisioned for him never fully materialized. That’s too bad, because it would have been fun to see the bandit package return.

Browner also never showed that he was any better at covering TEs than Kelcie McCray and Tyvis Powell. Given the option, the team will always go with the younger and cheaper player. That’s just the way the NFL works.

I should add though that I had Browner making the 53 man roster on my last 53 man roster projection. I had my doubts at the time, but figured he’d make it over Marcus Burley. That was clearly an incorrect assessment.

One of the reasons we’ll see Browner cut now instead of next week when the rosters are being reduced to 53 is out of respect to Browner. It is common for veterans to be cut early to give them more time to try and land on another roster before Week 1. It is considered a professional courtesy.

Next: Patrick Lewis to be cut too?

Browner was one of the original members of the Legion of Boom. He helped the team cement their identity as one of the most physical teams in the NFL. For that, I’ll always be grateful. I hope he find success on another roster this season.

Update: Even though Pete Carroll said they’d wait until Tuesday to announce anything, they officially cut Browner on Monday, per the league’s official transfer list.
