Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has a sprained MCL, but it is still uncertain if that will keep him from playing this week in New York.

The Seattle Seahawks are bracing for bad news about their starting quarterback. Russell Wilson went down in Sunday’s game against the 49ers with a knee injury. He had an MRI today, but that didn’t provide the answers we were hoping for.

Here is what we know:

  • Wilson has a sprained MCL
  • The sprain is a “grade 2,” so not minor, but also not a major injury
  • It will not require surgery
  • Wilson wants to try to play through it

Here is what we still don’t know:

  • Wilson’s status for Sunday’s game vs the Jets
  • How long the Seahawks will hold him out
  • How much the injury will effect him once he returns

Basically, we still know almost nothing. We may know what the injury is, but the extent of the injury and how it will effect the Seahawks remains a mystery.

On Block and Salk this morning, Pete Carroll made it sound like Wilson is going to play.

"I just left him,” Carroll said. “He’s unbelievable, OK. He feels great. He’s been rehabbing all night and doing his thing, and he can move around, walking fine. You can’t tell anything. He’s really excited about the thought that he could be able to maybe get through this thing."

The issue here is that this is about more than just Wilson’s pain tolerance. This particular injury is one that leaves Wilson open to re-injury.

The Seahawks are deciding between sitting Wilson for 3 weeks now and the possibility of losing him for much more than that if his knee takes another big hit. They aren’t winning in the playoffs without him. They may not make it to the playoffs if they sit him.

Now there are reports that the Seahawks are planning on sitting him for three weeks.

Here’s the thing with that report though: “league source” means someone who isn’t with the Seahawks. The wording also makes it sound like it is what some other team is speculating will happen.

So once again, we still don’t know anything.

The key here will be what happens in the roster moves on Tuesday. If Wilson is going to be out, the Seahawks will look to sign a veteran QB to backup Travone Boykin in New York this week. If they don’t add a QB, than we can assume that the plan is for Wilson to play.

For now, we just have to wait and try to avoid panicking if at all possible.

Update: Pete Carroll talked about Wilson in today’s press conference and now says that He expects Wilson to play Sunday

That is obviously good news. Now the offensive line needs to make sure that he doesn’t get hurt again.
