We all know Pete Carroll likes versatility. He has to be one of those guys that uses the body wash/shampoo combo products, right? I actually think he just showers with Dawn dishwashing liquid. It works for sea otters and seagulls, it’s gotta work for Seahawks.

I’m sure he uses a spork, too. Not just any spork, but the weird one that has the serrated edge. It’s a good thing Pete wasn’t around in 1976, or today you’d almost certainly be rooting for the Seattle Sporks.

We love Pete, but what matters to us is how he applies this love of versatility to the Seahawks.

For example, Seattle loves plugging players into different roles on the offensive line. One of the biggest reasons the Seahawks drafted Ethan Pocic was the fact he is versatile enough to play anywhere on the line. He played center in college, they expect to use him at guard, and he played tackle in minicamp. You could say Pocic is a versatile player in the Seahawk mold.

This goes far beyond moving players up and down the offensive line, though. It may have slipped your mind, but when the Seahawks picked up former Dolphin DE Dion Jordan there was a lot of talk that he might be given a shot at the strongside linebacker spot. We’re not making this up. The great Bob Condotta talked about it in the Seattle Times. It was also mentioned as a possibility in the Daily World in an article on turnover at linebacker. Since he’s still recuperating from knee surgery, it seems more likely he’ll make the team on the defensive line. A lot less to learn, and he’s got an uphill battle as it is.

Kam at Sam? I am, said Kam.

Okay, not so fast on this one. But it is a possibility. There has been a lot of speculation that Kam Chancellor could move up to the strong side as well. People have talked about this as long ago as 2012. Personally I think our own Lee Vowell had the best take on the possibility.

It hardly stops at Jordan and Chancellor, either. The Seahawks have TE Tyrone Swoopes on the roster. As you no doubt recall Swoopes played his entire Texas Longhorn career as a quarterback. The last two were exclusively as a wildcat QB, but a QB nonetheless.

Picture the possibilities for the Seahawks

Picture it. The Hawks line up in a two TE formation. Lacy is lined up at fullback, Prosise as a halfback. Suddenly Swoopes shifts behind center and Wilson moves up into the slot. Prosise splits wide next to Angry Doug. Wilson goes into motion, the ball is snapped…that’s a lot of reads for the defense.

I fully expect that particular scenario will never, ever happen. But it could, and that alone has to have defensive coordinators drawing up schemes in their sleep. It’s all about the versatility.
