Marcus Trufant Re-Signs With Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks and Marcus Trufant have agreed on a one year contract that will return the former pro-bowl CB to Seattle.

Trufant was once considered to be one of the premier corners in the NFL, but multiple back injuries have robbed him of some of the agility that made him a pro-bowler. Trufant began last season as the starting CB, but was lost to IR before mid-season. Although he played decently, his replacement, Richard Sherman, stepped in and proved to be a dominant CB.

Trufant was released before the start of free agency in year. He wasn’t going to be a starter on this team after Sherman’s breakout 2011 season, and thus wasn’t worth the $5.9M he was scheduled to make.

Trufant will have to adjust to his new roll as a backup, though I expect him to get considerable playing time in the nickel package. I’ve been saying for almost 2 seasons now that Trufant could prolong his career by making the move to FS, and this could be the beginning of that. Trufant would play like a 2nd FS on some downs, and cover a WR on others.

Trufant had visited with the Broncos, and seemed close to reaching a deal with them not too long ago. No word on why he decided to return to Seattle instead.
