Russell Wilson announced Wednesday that he is filing for divorce from his wife of two years.
The Seahawks released a statement on Wednesday on Wilson’s behalf.
"“I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce. Clearly, decisions like these don’t come easy. Ashton and I respectfully ask for prayers, understanding and privacy during this difficult time. Moving forward, I will have no further comment on this personal matter.”"
The two had been married since January 2012, just a few months before the Seahawks drafted Wilson.
When Seattle announced their pick, the couple shared a great moment of true joy and excitement.
Wilson has since been one of the best players in the NFL since that day and gained popularity around the league for his work ethic and dedication to the game.
Off the field, he is known for visiting children’s hospitals in Seattle and giving back to the community.
Ashton, an event planner according to her Twitter, often goes with him on those trips to the hospital and has publicly supported her husband throughout his career.
In a November interview with KIRO Radio, she was asked if she flinches when Russell gets hit on the field.
She responded:
"“Yeah, of course I naturally flinch because my body wants to fly out on the field and handle that situation. But I can’t,” she says. “I would be out there on the field blocking for my husband, but I’m not quite big enough.”"
The two have asked for privacy during this time and, as the statement read, will not be commenting further on the situation.
