Michael Bennett: Seahawks have best defense ‘ever’

The Seattle Seahawks are a great team, and many of its players aren’t shy acknowledging that.

On Wednesday, defensive end Michael Bennett spoke with NFL Now and said that the Seahawks defense is not just the best in the league, it’s the best… in the history of football.

Per Sports Illustrated:

"“We’re the best defense to ever play football,” Bennett said. “So when we play the way we play, we’re capable of playing, I don’t think — whatever he did didn’t really matter. It’s just, when we line up and we line up and play the way we’re capable of playing, I don’t think anybody can play with us.”"

Seattle’s defense has certainly made a case in the past few seasons as being in the conversation with the 1985 Chicago Bears, 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers or 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

This year, even with a rough 3-3 start, the Seahawks defense ranks first in the league in yards allowed per play (4.7) and points allowed per game (16.5).

They have the best secondary in the league, allowing only 184.5 yards per game through the air and their run defense allows only 84 rushing yards per game, third-best in the NFL.

During their current five-game winning streak, the Seahawks defense is allowing only 6.6 points per game and has allowed their opponent double-digit points only once.

On Tuesday, the Seahawks had five players selected to the Pro Bowl and four of them were on defense — Kam Chancellor, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas and Bobby Wagner.

It was Thomas’ fourth Pro Bowl selection, Chancellor’s third selection, Sherman’s second and Wagner’s first.

But they make up the core of a defense which Seattle will hope can stay hot like they were last season, en route to their first Super Bowl victory.

The Seahawks can clinch the NFC West and No. 1 seed in the conference with a win on Sunday against the 6-9 St. Louis Rams.

If the defense can limit the Rams offense to single-digits, it will be the sixth time this year they have done that.

Seattle’s defense is without doubt impressive, but do you agree with Bennett that it’s the best of all time? If not, whose defense is?
