Seahawks and Marshawn Lynch Talking Huge Extension

Huge news just hours before Super Bowl 49 kicks off and the Seattle Seahawks look to win their second Lombardi Trophy in franchise history, this time against the New England Patriots.

NFL.com insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Seahawks and their star running back Marshawn Lynch are very close to agreeing to a contract extension that could be worth as much as $10 million in 2015. Lynch’s 2014 contract was worth $6.5 million, and that was after he held out for an extra $1.5 million before the season began.

As it stands now, Lynch is scheduled to make just $5 million for the upcoming season. People close to Lynch have been saying for months that Beast Mode would seriously consider retirement if Seattle won a second Super Bowl. Doubling Lynch’s salary, along with a hefty signing bonus would likely persuade the All-Pro to keep playing. Although, Lynch doesn’t come across as a man that makes decisions based on money.

After the season that Lynch just put up, leading the Seahawks to their second consecutive Super Bowl appearance, it’s not surprising that the team would want him back for at least one more season. Four straight seasons of 1,200 rushing yards and leading the NFL in touchdowns in 2014 shows that Lynch is still one of the top playmakers in the league.

The Seahawks are a team full of amazing characters, none more so than Marshawn Lynch. It would be hard for Seattle’s 12th Man to imagine a squad without the punishing running back as the center of the offense. A contract extension would likely keep Lynch in a Seahawks uniform for the remainder of his NFL career.

Aside from the Minnesota Vikings’ Adrian Peterson, no running back has been as consistent as Lynch. Lynch has easily outplayed his current contract with the Seahawks, which was a 4-year, $31 million deal and the team is going to reward him for his efforts.

Of course, all of this comes after the Seahawks were rumored to not want to bring Lynch back after this season. Something that Head Coach Pete Carroll has denied since the rumors began.

Seattle is a team full of young talent. Talent that will need to be paid once their rookie contracts expire. Quarterback Russell Wilson will be seeing a huge increase in yearly salary. The third year QB is making south of $800,000 and will presumably sign a deal worth somewhere close to $20 million per year.

Linebacker Bobby Wagner will also see a raise in the near future. Wagner missed five games this past season and still managed to not only be named as a first team All-Pro, but also earn the same amount of MVP votes as Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, one.

Retaining Wagner won’t come cheap.

Regardless of what happens with Lynch and a contract extension, or Wilson and Wagner’s new deals in the offseason, the Seattle Seahawks are appearing in their third Super Bowl in the past ten years.

Everyone’s attention is focused on that today. With a victory Wilson would become the youngest quarterback to win two Super Bowl’s in NFL history. Seattle would also become the first team to win the Lombardi Trophy in back-to-back seasons since the Patriots did it ten years ago.
