Final. Patriots win 28-24. Wilson throws a pick at the goal line. No idea why Seattle didn’t run the ball with Lynch there. No one will ever know, but it was clearly a mistake by the coaches.
Not going to pull an punches here. Seattle got out-coached in the 4th quarter on both sides of the ball. They still should have won. I think I’m going to be sick.
Two Minute Warning
Seattle is down 4, and 49 yards away from from a Championship. A 31 yard completion from Wilson to Lynch to start the drive certainly helps things. If you’re Russell Wilson, this is where legends are made. Make it happen Russ!
4th Q, 2:02 – Touchdown Patriots Another big drive by the Brady and Patriots. Seattle’s pass rush is nonexistent, and the D-line is clearly exhausted. That was too easy. Seattle’s offense now must get a TD in the last 2 minutes to win this.
4th Q, 6:42 – Patriots get the ball back after an absolutely blatant trip of Richardo Lockette goes uncalled and Seattle goes 3 and out. Seattle’s defense looks exhausted, but they desperately need a stop here.
Here’s New England’s touchdown.
Touchdown Patriots It looked like Seattle was going to pull away there for a bit, but the Patriots answer and now just a FG separate these two teams. 4th Q, 9:30 – This game seems to have swung back the other way. Seattle could do nothing with their next drive, and now Brady is driving. This drive has been helped by a bad penalty by Seattle too. The defense needs a stop.
End of Third Quarter That was a great quarter for the Seahawks! now up 10, and doing just about anything they want on offense. Had it not been for an awful drop by Kearse, they’d have put up even more points. Seattle is 15 minutes away from their 2nd straight Super Bowl Championship. Another Injury Seattle’s defense takes another hit. This time it is defensive end Cliff Avril. He went to the locker room for concussion tests; likely out for the rest of the game.
Touchdown Seahawks! Seattle capitalizes on the turnover as Baldwin gets the TD for Seattle. The Seahawks extend their lead to 10 here in the 3rd quarter.
Interception! Seahawks bringing the pressure now, and Brady keep ending up on his back. The pressure forced another bad throw, and Bobby Wagner picked it off. Seahawks Take the Lead Good drive by Seattle to open the end half, but Lynch can’t convert on 3rd and 1 and Hauschka comes on to put Seattle up by a FG. Great start by Seattle in the second half, including another massive catch by Chris Matthews who now has 100 receiving yards. Halftime Stats Wilson didn’t complete his first pass until the 2nd quarter was over half over. Of course, he only had 2 attempts as well, because the Patriots weren’t letting Seattle have any time of possession. Wilson made it count though, and got Seattle into the end zone both the team’s last 2 possessions
Here’s how the teams stacked up in the first half: And here are the top performers for each team: Here’s the last second TD:
Halftime – Not a good half for Seattle. The Patriots have been able to do what they want offensively, and the Seahawks haven’t been able to do much when they have the ball. Luckily, the Seahawks Figured things out offensively. They need to make some halftime adjustments and figure out how to pull this one out. I’ll post some stats in a few minutes. Touchdown Seahawks! Gutsy call by Pete Carroll to go for the TD with just 0:06 left and it pays off. Chris Matthews catches the back shoulder throw, and we’re all tied up! Wow! Touchdown Patriots Seattle can’t tackle, and the Pats walked down the field answer with a TD of their own. Took only 1:45 to get into the end zone. Touchdown Seahawks! We’re all tied up now. Lynch into the end zone from 3 yards out.
2nd Q, 3:38 – Seattle on the move. Wilson with 2 competitions finally. Including the 1st career catch for Chris Matthews, and it was a great one.
2nd Q, 7:07 – not going to post the picture because its graphic, but it’s clear that Jeremy Lane’s arm is broken. Seahawks changed up their coverage. Put Kam on Gronk full time, and stayed in base defense on that drive. Pats went 3 and out. Seattle with the ball back, but still hasn’t be able to do anything on offense. 2nd Q, 8:17 – Another 3 and out for Seattle’s offense. A sack. Poor blocking on a Lynch run, and no one open on 3rd down. Looking like another bad day shaping up for Seattle on the offensive side of the ball.
2nd Q, 9:54 – Touchdown Patriots. Brady picking on Simon on that drive, including on the TD. Seahawks down now. They need the offense to step up.
2nd Q, 12:00 – Patriots continue to dink and dunk. Lots of 3-5 yard completions as they string together long drives. Seattle’s defense needs make a play. New England driving again. End of First Quarter – That was a crazy-fast quarter of play. Seattle picked up a first down but still is struggling to establish much of anything on offense. Lane Hurt – Turn out that Lane hurt his arm on the run back of the interception. Carted off. Burley is inactive, so Seattle is without a true slot cornerback now. Expect to see Maxwell slide inside when Seattle goes to the nickel, with Lane on the outside.
Interception! – Jeremy Lane picks the ball off at the goal line. Seahawks got some pressure on Brady and he rushed a throw. Lane just dropped back in his zone and Brady couldn’t get the ball over him.
1st Q, 5:02 – Patriots driving here on their second possession, and the Seahawks bring in their backups on the defensive line. Dobbs and Cohen both spending time on the field this drive at DT.
1st Q, 9:41 – 3 and out for Seattle after 3 straight Lynch runs only gain 8 yards. Justin Britt got manhandled by Wilfork on third down.
1st Q, 11:44 – Patriots get 1 first down, but that’s it. A running into the kicker penalty is declined, and Seattle takes over. Time for Beast mode and Wilson to get things started for Seattle’s offense.
Kickoff! – We’re underway in Arizona! Sherman starts the game covering Gronk on the outside. That’ll be the matchup to watch today when the Pats have the ball. 3:29 pm – Waiting for the coin toss now. Looking at the stadium, and there is a ton of blue in the stands. This will be close to a home game for Seattle. Seattle wins the toss and will defer. Patriots get the ball first.
3:25 pm – John Legend’s God Bless America was amazing. Idina Menzel was better, which is amazing in itself. Millions of little girls out there are disappointed she didn’t sing Let it Go. 3:15 pm – Both teams are on the field. normally that means we’re about 5 minutes from kickoff, but today is the Super Bowl. Instead we likely have about 3 more hours of pregame.
NBC is doing everything in their power to create narrative where there isn’t one. Their talking heads have been going on and on about how gimpy Kam Chancellor looked in warmups when nothing could be further from the truth. While he is wearing a knee brace, he move and jumped without issue and looked explosive in his cuts. There was no limp at all.
Inactive have been released. no major surprises here:

Super Bowl XLIX is here! No more deflating footballs. No more “I’m just here so I won’t be fined.” No more predictions. It’s time for the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots to decide things on the field. I’ll be posting throughout the game. Random thoughts, highlights, score updates and all manner of game topics will be included, so be sure to check back often. Also, new content will always be posted at the top, so if it’s been a while since you’ve reloaded that page, be sure to read from the bottom up. We’re still about two hours away from kickoff, but players are beginning to get themselves ready to play.
One big question has already been answered. Richard Sherman’s girlfriend did not go into labor yet. He’s playing, in case there was any doubt. The status of Kam Chancellor is still being decided. He’s out there warming up with a knee brace after twisting his knee on Friday. Team doctors appear to be evaluating how healthy he is. There isn’t supposed to be any question about his playing status, but hopefully he’ll be at full speed.
One common comment I’m seeing from fans and media at the game is that 12s outnumber Patriots by a wide margin. It’s been that way all week around town, so this isn’t too surprising.
Hopefully it’ll still feel like that when the stadium is full.
