According to the NFL’s transaction log, the Seattle Seahawks have begun adding names to their 2015 roster by signing practice squad players to “futures” deals. These contracts don’t take affect until the first day of the league year when rosters expand to 90.

  • TE RaShaun Allen
  • DT Jimmy Staten
  • S Dion Bailey
  • RB Demitrius Bronson
  • LB Mike Zimmer
  • G Nate Isles
  • WR Douglas McNeil
  • DE Ryan Robinson
  • G Drew Nowak
  • T Justin Renfrow
  • DE Julius Warmsley

The biggest name on that list like probably DT Jimmy Staten. He was Seattle’s 5th round draft pick in 2014 and has managed to hang around the team’s practice squad even as the Seahawks have cycled through a large number of other players at the position.

TE RaShaun Allen was actually on Seattle’s active roster for a short time this season. He was signed off the practice squad when Zach Miller went onto injured reserve. All was later cut and then signed to the practice squad when Tony Moeaki was signed.

The only player from the practice squad that wasn’t signed was LB Allen Bradford, who’s spent parts of the last 2 seasons with Seattle. He’s been close to making the active roster a couple of times, and caught on with the Giants and Jaguars for a bit as well. He is likely looking for a situation where he has a better shot at making a 53 man roster spot after training camp.

Seattle’s roster actually makes it difficult to attract guys on futures deals. The roster is very deep, and they have 12 draft picks in the upcoming draft. Neither of those things make Seattle an appealing landing spot for someone hoping catch on the bottom of the roster.

The only limit to the number of these types of deals that Seattle can sign is that the roster can never go above 90 players. The draft picks don’t count toward that until the players signs a contract. This means that it is extremely possible that the Seahawks are not done signing street free agents as they transition to the 2015 league year.
