Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin Apologizes for Defecation Celebration
By Paul Novak
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin found himself apologizing on a Seattle radio show nearly three weeks after his somewhat controversial touchdown celebration in Super Bowl 49.
After catching a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Russell Wilson, giving the Seahawks a ten point lead, 24-14, Baldwin stopped in his tracks, squatted and simulated defecating the football in the endzone.
When asked about the meaning behind the unique move, Baldwin responded, “that is between me and the guy it was directed at.”
After initially refusing to identify the target of his obscene gesture, Baldwin later admitted that it was Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis that it was directed towards.
"“I spent a lot of time those two weeks prior to getting ready for that game just focused on my individual matchup with him and I put a lot into it, and in that moment, I guess you could say it was just kind of a built-up frustration I was letting out in that sequence, you know, between him and I,” Baldwin said Monday night. “Obviously there was competitive stuff going on in that game, and in that moment, I just let out what I felt personally.”"
The move was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct and resulted in a 15-yard penalty. Baldwin was also fined $11,025 by the NFL.
"“In that moment, it was just a reaction,” he added later in the show. “So obviously if I could go back, I would take it back.”"
During the show Baldwin was also asked about the final playcall and whether he thinks Marshawn Lynch will play next season.
"“We all take blame in what happened in the Super Bowl and in losses, and to put solely the blame on Darrell Bevell is irresponsible,” he said.As for Marshawn Lynch, who is said to be weighing retirement, “At the end of the day … he’s got to do what’s best for him,” Baldwin said."
Personally I thought the move was a little classless and it definitely wasn’t worth doing since it resulted in a 15-yard penalty with plenty of time left in the game. At the same time, we’ve seen much worse and people calling for Doug Baldwin to be released are taking the seriousness of one act way too far.
