Diamond In The Rough for the Seattle Seahawks in the draft?

Deion Sanders has, at times, shown his admiration towards Richard Sherman, most recently after the NFC Championship game. Sanders opinion matters, make no mistake. If Deion says it was a great pick it may be your best.

It’s been said that Sherman’s success at cornerback has much to do with his days as a receiver. Look no further than how he picked-off Aaron Rodgers in January. Sherman has hands Steve Largent can appreciate.

Looking ahead to the draft, I have a name for Seattle and my 12th Man friends: SaQwan Edwards. He appears to be a possible draft diamond in the rough for the Seattle Seahawks.

Edwards hasn’t done a great job avoiding controversy, but according to some draft boards he’s a second day, later round pick. At 6’1 he has the height and as a former receiver he has the hands. Here’s what we know:

"In 2013 as a Lobo, Edwards made a successful switch from wide receiver to cornerback and was a starter on defensive in 2013. He has the size and length for his position and has great hands that he now uses to break up passes in man coverage. He is confident at the cornerback position that will help him make plays in the NFL.HIGH SCHOOL: Recorded team highs with 43 receptions, 769 yards and eight TDs in 2009 as a senior for Manvel High School…had 18 receptions for a team-leading 348 yards with four TDs his junior year at Manvel…a two-time All-District 24-4A and All-County selection and an honorable-mention All-State WR his senior year…a regional qualifier in track and field in the 4-by-200 meters."

Athletic, confident, good size. Ladies and Gentlemen, physically that’s LOB material.

My stance on the draft is never going to change. After Ryan Leaf became a cartoon when he was a “can’t miss,” I became a draft skeptic. In 2012 I was told I was nuts when I said RGIII won’t be a championship QB. He’s young, but I haven’t changed my mind. Jameis Winston is a PR bomb waiting to hurt whoever picks him over Marcus Mariota. Tampa! You’re on the clock….probably.

No fan base in the world knows how little size means. Russell Wilson is a champion because he has passion, heart and drive (scouts fail to see that intangible most times). So the 6’1 is a plus for Edwards but his drive and character will win games.

Tharold Simon was played with in the Super Bowl. It was a tough day Seattle can’t allow to happen. Jeremy Lane is a rising star with the Seahawks and the LOB, but just had ACL surgery. SaQwan can help immediately if need be.

Forget the rounds and keep in mind, JaMarcus Russell was a can’t miss. He lost the love and the passion and discovered Twinkies. No passion, no chance to succeed.

GO HAWKS!
