The Seattle Seahawks are hurt in multiple ways by the Brandon Marshall trade. They lose out on acquiring the receiver, lose draft capital, and another contender will get stronger.

The Chicago Bears have traded wide receiver Brandon Marshall to the New York Jets. It is a trade that hurts the Seattle Seahawks in multiple ways. Mostly, it’ll cost the Seahawks two rounds with one of their draft picks.

It was a long shot, but the Seahawks had been one of the teams trying to acquire Marshall. Seattle’s need at wide receiver is huge, and Marshall is one of the best in the NFL. This trade closes the door on that possibility. The Seahawks will now have to look for another way to improve their roster’s worst position group.

More importantly though it that this trade means that the Jets will now cut wide receiver Percy Harvin. That means that the draft pick compensation that the Seahawks will receive from the Jets will drop from a fourth round pick to a sixth round selection. That is the difference between selecting a player that can contribute right away, to taking a guy who may not even make the roster his rookie year.

The Jets had indicated that they wanted to keep Harvin, but only if he was willing to restructure his contract. There had been some reluctance from Harvin’s camp to do so. Now Harvin will become a free agent can could sign anywhere.

The most likely scenario for Harvin is that he’ll land in New England. The Patriots have the salary cap room to acquire the dynamic receiver. They also have the locker room to keep Harvin’s ego in check and get the most out of the mercurial receiver.

So Seattle loses out on acquiring Marshall, lose two rounds on one of their draft picks, and another contender will get stronger. Not a great day for the Seahawks by any means.
