Marshawn Lynch Re-signs with Seattle Seahawks for One Year
By Paul Novak
Seattle Seahawks fans can rest easy as it appears that BeastMode, Marshawn Lynch is coming back for at least one more year and another Super Bowl run.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted that Lynch and his agent were on a plane headed from Oakland to Seattle to sign a new deal today, per one of his sources.
King 5 reporter Elisa Hahn also tweeted a picture of Lynch and his agent at the Oakland airport so the rumors definitely have some legs. Plus when Schefter breaks news like this, it’s rarely inaccurate.
The new contract is valued at $11 million and is a hefty $6 million raise from what Lynch was scheduled to earn for the 2015 NFL season.
Per ESPN’s John Clayton, the one-year contract will carry only a $1 million salary but will include a signing bonus of $9 million to go along with a roster bonus of another $1 million.
Earlier this month reports were that the Seahawks had offered Lynch a multi-year extension. The one year deal is a slight surprise, but will also allow both Lynch and the Seahawks front office to reevaluate the situation again next offseason. And let’s face it, one would think Marshawn Lynch would retire before playing for any other organization.
Lynch will be 29-years-old at the start of the upcoming season and although his production hasn’t seen any regression thus far, he’s at an age where running backs tend to break down from the hardships of playing in the NFL.
Lynch’s style of play doesn’t do him any favors either as he’s known for finding contact and often needing to be brought down by multiple defenders.
Aside from extending Russell Wilson, bringing Lynch back had to be the primary goal for this offseason for Seahawks general manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll.
The Seahawks have been planning for Lynch’s departure for the past few seasons when they drafted both Christine Michael and Robert Turbin. Neither come close to providing the attitude or production that Lynch does.
