Jay Glazer of Fox Sports is reporting that the Seahawks and Saints have agreed to a deal that would send three-time Pro Bowl tight end Jimmy Graham to the Seahawks along with a fourth-round draft pick for center Max Unger and a first-round draft pick.
Unger is a two-time Pro Bowler and was also named as a first team All-Pro once in his career.
As the trade has just began to be reported, it is still unclear what the exact details of the draft picks remains to be. Seattle is going to give up a first-round pick, but if that includes this years 31st overall selection is unclear.
Regardless of the draft picks, the biggest news is that the Seahawks will be getting one of the NFL’s top tight ends in the deal. Graham will add a Pro Bowl caliber player on offense to go alongside Marshawn Lynch and Russell Wilson.
In his first five years in the NFL, Graham has 51-career touchdowns and has amassed double-digit TD’s in three of those five seasons.
Jimmy Graham is currently the highest paid tight end in the NFL at around $10 million per year. The ability to trade for such a player allows to Seahawks to save a compensatory draft pick, something they would not have been able to do if they signed Julius Thomas or Jordan Cameron off of the free agent market.
The loss of Max Unger will be sad news for Seahawks fans. Unger has steadily been the most consistent offensive lineman on a unit that has gone through a decent amount of change in the past few years. Last season’s health concerns and his inability to stay on the field, coupled with being one of the highest paid centers in football made Unger a possible cap casualty in the offseason.
Swapping the two players really benefits both teams in key areas of need.
