Lost in the celebration of the Jimmy Graham acquisition is the loss of Max Unger. It’s probably safe to say that Unger’s heart was broken a bit. Seattle is the land of 12’s, the greatest fans in the NFL. Players are treated with respect and much love is shown to the most popular.

For sure it’s safe to say Max Unger was a favorite.

When the Seahawks injury report showed Unger as out, fans were always concerned. When he came back for the playoffs, a collective sigh of relief filled the Clink. Unger meant that much to his team and to the 12’s.

Obviously Seattle couldn’t pass up the chance to bring in Jimmy Graham. For the first time, Russell Wilson has a legitimate red zone and 3rd down receiver. At 6-foot-7, Graham will win many jump balls in the end zone. However, it’s still important to remember Unger’s contribution as a leading center in the game. Not easily replaced.

In an interview with 710 ESPN, Seattle, Unger spoke of having a tough time with the trade for a couple of days. He loved being a Seattle Seahawk and always represented the team with class. Max Unger was the definition of a team player who worked hard and was fiercely loyal.

He loved all the 12’s as well.

Players like Unger are the reason coaches continue to coach. Although Pete Carroll will remember Percy Harvin and his baggage, he’ll remember Unger when talking to young players about playing the right way.

Make no mistake, John Schneider did not want to add Unger to this deal. The phone call he made to Unger was most likely one of the more difficult calls he’s made. That day was difficult for everyone involved.

So, as we celebrate a major acquisition that will change Seattle’s offense, remember the contribution of a true professional who gave the Seahawks and their fans his all.

Good Luck Max Unger! You will be missed.

Go Hawks!
