Russell Wilson wants to play baseball too?

Russell Wilson is considering playing baseball again, and not just for a few days each spring. He is genuinely considering trying to re-start the baseball career he abandoned a few years ago.

Speaking with Greg Grumble from HBO, Wilson stated that he’d love to be two-sport athlete again.

"You never want to kill the dream of playing two sports,” Wilson said. “I would honestly play two sports.”Asked what’s stopping him, Wilson said, “I don’t know. I may push the envelope a little bit one of these days."

Like it or not, this is bad news for the Seahawks. Any attempt at resurrecting his baseball career will have a negative impact on Wilson’s life as an NFL quarterback. Being a quarterback is different than any other position in the NFL. There is always tape that need studied, even throughout the offseason.

Of course, it would help if Wilson was actually good at baseball. In his last year as pro (2011), he hit only .228 and struck out in 34.7% of his plate appearances. That was at the single-A level, and Wilson was one of the oldest players in that league.

Wilson’s return to football was more out of necessity than he is probably willing to admit. He still had pro-potential as a quarterback. Few teams would consider a 22-year old who can’t hit single-A pitching a real prospect.

Wilson’s reasons for saying he wants to play baseball are probably varied. For starters, he initially chose baseball over football. There is likely some part of him that wants to go back and prove that he can do it.

More likely though is that this is a negotiation ploy. The more he says he wants to play baseball, the more likely it is that the Seahawks are going to write it into his new contract that won’t be able to do so. Seattle will have to pay him more to keep him from having the option of lacing up the baseball cleats.
