NFL Draft Primer: Seahawks, NFC West, League Chatter

AROUND THE LEAGUE:
Tampa seems set to take Jameis Winston #1 overall, and reportedly had their minds made up in February. What happens at #2 is what will define the story of the first round, and it sounds like there’s a flurry of activity with the Browns and Eagles possibly jockeying to make a deal with the Titans. Both are trying to jump up and grab Oregon QB Marcus Mariota. Cleveland has two 1st round picks (#12 and #19), and have reportedly offered them both to Tennessee, but the Eagles may be the most fascinating storyline to follow. Chip Kelly scoffed at the notion of moving up that far for Mariota way back on March 11th, but his wheeling and dealing this offseason makes it clear he’s an aggressive personnel director. Moving from #20 to the 2nd pick would take a lot, but the Eagles are willing to move players and possibly future first round picks to get it done. This would then read as an all-in narrative on Chip Kelly’s future, getting his old Oregon trigger man for his offensive system. Simply for the dramatic possibilities of it all, it’s hard not to pull for this happening.
And if it does, rest assured you’ll see Sam Bradford once again on the move, possibly to Cleveland. Could it be any more obvious that Bradford was only acquired as a potential trade chip? Tim Tebow jersey’s are already on sale at the Eagles nflshop.com site, but Bradford’s still aren’t.
It’s also worth eyeing the perennial rise of the second tier QB prospects. Last year it was Teddy Bridgewater sneaking into the first round. Today, the hot name seems to be Bryce Petty. The Saints seem to think he’s the “best pure passer” in this draft, and could be poised to select him as Drew Brees’ eventual successor. Will they use the 31st pick acquired from Seattle to do it?
