People Are Not Usually This Eager To Discuss Crabs

The NFL is a social media and conventional media juggernaut. Something that seems very inconsequential to you may lead the sporting world headlines. But the line should be drawn (even by drama crazed ESPN) once we talk about Jameis Winston.

Winston is not always thinking clearly or doing what’s right. I’m not surprised, nor should you be, when Jameis gets sent to time-out occasionally. But c’mon, crabs? He can’t be blamed for taking the heat for stealing, then telling ESPN he didn’t do anything wrong. He wanted to be the number-one overall pick. He was trying to smooth over a silly overreaction by a bored media. I did the same thing while I was a stupid college kid after getting into trouble. I tried to minimize my involvement. Nobody cared because it’s just me.

Look, if Jameis Winston is a train wreck waiting to become the latest bust, then how did he win so often at a major university, in a BCS conference? If Winston is stupid, then explain his ability to read a defense so quick and lead his team so well? Lastly, how did he score a 27 on the Wunderlick Test at the NFL combine? Russell Wilson scored a 24 (Dan Marino’s still taking re-tests).

Michael Smith of ESPN believes an article written about Winston has a racist source because JaMarcus Russell was mentioned as a comparison to Jameis by an anonymous executive. With all due respect to Smith, this time the race card was the wrong play. Smith uses that card a lot so he’s going to be wrong at times. Heck, this time he’s not even close. Comparisons I’ve noticed of Winston is to Johnny Manziel and only as an off-field example. Russell is, after Ryan Leaf (caucasian), possibly the biggest bust amongst NFL quarterbacks drafted high in the first round. JaMarcus being in over his head is not an issue of race. It’s simply an issue of adaptability in a crummy system (Raiders). Russell never had a chance.

I want Jameis Winston to succeed and have a long career. Let me rephrase: I want him to succeed against all teams not in Seattle.

He deserves to succeed and as long as the system in Tampa is built around his skill set (show him some Lovie) and he stays out of trouble (no free crabs, man), he will succeed. In the meantime, back away and let him breathe. He’ll make good decisions soon enough.
