Jermaine Kearse Signs Restricted Free Agent Tender
By Alexis Bravo
Jermaine Kearse is definitely staying with the Seahawks now. The former husky signed a new deal… Sorta.
Per Adam Schefter:
In other words, he’ll be playing for the Hawks this up-coming season. Before this, another team could have signed him to an offer sheet – meaning that they will have to give up a second round pick to acquire him – but that never happened.
That also meant Seattle was set on keeping him from the get-go, as no one would be willing to give that up… for him anyways. A second round pick is a steep price to pay for player of Kearse’s ability.
It’s similar to the deal Doug Baldwin signed the previous offseason, some time before his contract extension. Baldwin was also a restricted free agent, but wound up not playing on his one-year contract.
According to Over The Cap, the value of a 2nd round tender in 2015 is $2.35 million dollars (that’s the lowest amount Seattle could offer him and still received draft pick compensation if signed by another team). This also serves as a good barometer for the range Seattle is likely willing to shell out if they were planning on keeping him long term.
Kearse was 2nd in receptions (38) and in receiving yards (537) for the Seahawks this past season.
