Ricardo Lockette talks about coming to grips with the Super Bowl win that didn’t happen
By Keith Myers
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Ricardo Lockette finally opened up about the end of the Super Bowl. Writing an incredibly well-written piece for the Player’s Tribune, Lockette discussed the play where quarterback Russell Wilson was intercepted at the goal line, and the difficulty Lockette has had coming to grips with the loss.
There is so much insight in there that I cannot discuss it all here. I highly recommend clicking on the link and reading his words directly. It is notable that the players don’t seem fault the play-call the way the fans do.
The final part of Lockette’s piece truly stood out in my opinion. He wrote about seeing Russell Wilson in Hawaii, and speaking to him for the first time since the Super Bowl.
"I was standing there looking out at the ocean for a long time, and Russ walked up to me. It was the first time we’d seen each other since the Super Bowl. I told him how I’d been having a lot of sleepless nights. He said him, too. Then he looked at me and said, “We’re going to get back there, and if we’re in that same position again, I’m going to throw you the ball again. We’re going to get it done. I trust you.”This wasn’t some rehearsed speech. There are quarterbacks out there who will say things like that, and as it’s coming out of their mouth, you know they don’t believe it. The special thing about Russ is that no matter what happens, his belief in others is beyond anything you’ll ever see in football. That matters to guys like you wouldn’t believe.I told him, “I got you.”We hugged, and that was it. That was all that needed to be said."
If you listen to a couple of Seahawks bloggers, they’ll have you believe that the Seattle players don’t respect Wilson and think he’s fake. They’ll cite the reports from a year ago that Wilson “isn’t black enough” and their own personal “sources” that likely don’t exist.
Lockette’s article should finally put that ridiculous angle to bed for good. It won’t, but it should.
