Seattle Seahawks training camp notes for August 7th
By Keith Myers
It was a very short training camp practice for the Seattle Seahawks today. They have their annual mock game tomorrow, so today’s practice was reduced to a padless walkthrough.
Tomorrow’s scrimmage will be followed by an off-day on Sunday. Monday’s practice is my annual day at camp as a fan (So if you’re there PLEASE come by and say hi!). I’ll still have my notes from Monday’s practice, but they’ll be late. We’ll return to our regular schedule for camp coverage on Tuesday.
Here are my notes from today’s abbreviated practice:
Douglas McNeil continues to work at learning how to play CB. He also continues to get almost constant tutoring from Richard Sherman. Sherman has been coaching up McNeil after almost every rep.
Cary Williams spent more time 1-on-1 with Kris Richard today. Richard was having Williams play press coverage without using his hands. Williams’ footwork, specifically eliminating false steps, was the one big technique issue that needed to be corrected in camp this year.
Kristjan Sokoli continues getting reps at LG, though more with the 2nd team than with the 1s today. Alvin Bailey is the starter, and it looks like no one is pushing him out of that spot this year (at least not yet).
With the super-versatile Bailey now anchored in the LG spot, the Seahawks have started moving Terry Poole around. He’s had reps at both guard spots, and today he was the 2nd team RT. Tom Cable appears to be grooming Poole to take over Bailey’s role as the swing lineman.
Doug Baldwin worked out with the defensive linemen for a bit today. They were working on hand fighting, and Baldwin joined in. Marshawn Lynch tends to participate in that particular drill too, but he didn’t today.
Former Seahawks OLB/DE Chad Brown, who is here in camp as a coaching intern, was running the drill. It was really cool to see him out there coaching.
At one point, Michael Bennett stopped mid run and went back to the beginning to start over. He apparently wasn’t happy about his technique on that rep and wanted to run through the drill again. That’s the type of work ethic that has helped him become one of the best in the game.
That’s it for day, but I’ll leave you with a couple of tweets from other members of Seattle’s media.
