Kam Chancellor fails to report, costs himself a lot of money

The holdout of Kam Chancellor continues, and it now now is costing him real money. The Seattle Seahawks will have to play meaningful football games without their star strong safety.

In the NFL, Tuesday is the money day of the week. Players on the roster or practice squad on Tuesday will get a game check equal to 1/17th of their annual salary. By not reporting today, Chancellor has forfeited that game check.

According to Spotrac, Chancellor’s salary for the 2015 season is $4.55 million. That means that by failing to report today, Chancellor cost himself $267,647.

Unlike the other potential costs of the holdout, losing that money is not discretionary by the team. That money is now gone. The Seahawks also get that amount put back into their salary cap.

That isn’t the only financial cost for Chancellor for not reporting today. The CBA also allows the Seahawks to fine Chancellor and additional $250,000 for breach of contract. That means that by not showing up today, Chancellor may have cost himself over half of a million dollars.

If course, all of this is on top of the $50,000 per day the Seahawks can fine Chancellor for his holdout. Plus there is the $125,000 of his signing bonus they now have the right to recoup as well.

All told, Chancellor’s holdout has potentially cost him over $1.87 million.

For a guy that is looking for more money than the $4.5 million he was due to make this season, this holdout has become extremely counter-productive.

At this point, Kam is betting that Dion Bailey fails horribly in Week 1 against the Rams. If Bailey plays poorly and causes the Seahawks to lose, Chancellor believes this will cause the Seahawks to cave in and meet his contract demands.

On the other hand, if Bailey proves to be a capable player, Chancellor will have lost the tiny shred of leverage that he has.

Either way, hopefully this will be the last week that we have to deal with this Chancellor holdout.

Hopefully.
