Pete Carroll: “We never should have lost that game”
By Dan Viens
(Renton, WA) Pete Carroll has had a chance to study yesterday’s 34-31 overtime loss to the Rams on tape, and expanded on his thoughts today at his weekly press conference at the VMAC. Here are some of the highlights:

CLARIFYING THE SHORT KICK TO OPEN OVERTIME:
“We were kicking the ball deep to the big tackle, we wanted him to return it and see what he could do. It was something we had in the game plan. They had left him there throughout the game so we had a shot at it, and the ball was supposed to go all the way down to the 25 yard line but that didn’t happen. We just missed the kick.”
ON HOW HE EXPECTS THE TEAM TO BOUNCE BACK AGAINST GREEN BAY THIS WEEK:
“We have a pretty set discipline about getting back to work the next week and we already kicked that into action today. Whether it’s a big win or a big loss we have to respond and we do that by going back to the routine that we have.”
ON THE FAILED 4TH AND 1 PLAY THAT ENDED THE GAME:
“They won the line of scrimmage on that play and did a nice job attacking and we just weren’t able to get the crease that we needed. It’s a good play for us, a good concept and all that, it’s been really successful for us for a long time so we went with a real base though. They played it better than we did.”
ON THE OFFENSIVE LINE:
“It was a game of improvement during the day. We struggled a little bit early but seemeed to right itself when we found some more continuity. We had some drives that we were on the field for 10 plays plus, and even right off the bat we were out there for 12 plays. There’s a lot of hope there that we will play things well and continue to improve. They can’t help but get better, they’re so young together that we will get steady improvement through the early part of the schedule.”
ON EARL THOMAS FIRST GAME ACTION COMING BACK FROM SHOULDER SURGERY:
“He played very well. He was all over the place, did a nice job on all the stuff they tried to get up top. They had a number of big shots they looked to take and he was there for them. I thought that could happen in this game, and he did a really nice job. He tackled pretty well and I think he found his confidence as he went through the game.”
ON RICHARD SHERMAN PLAYING MORE SLOT CORNER:
“He’s going to be a real factor in there whenever we use him in there, and it’s a real plus that we’ve had the opportunity to mix him in. Depends on the matchups each week and how it goes, and the different things we’re trying to get done but it’s nice to have that flexibility. We’ve never really had it before, and he’s really taken to it.
ON RUSSELL WILSON’S PERFORMANCE:
“We really wanted to get the ball out and see if we could catch and run and keep the pass rush from being a factor and you could see the plan once we got going. He did a really nice job moving the ball around. There’s just always plays we’d like to get back and he (Wilson) mentioned a couple times had he gone a different direction he might have been able to get the ball out and avoid getting sacked. He’d be the first to admit that he could help the rush in that regard in pass protection up front. It would be a good solid game, I think. When you complete almost 80% of your passes that’s pretty good but there’s things that can be done better.”
ON DION BAILEY’S PERFORMANCE:
“He was working hard at it. He didn’t have a lot of action his way….all in all he did OK. There’s things he can clean up and tighten up on alignments and things like that and there’s little things that happened that everybody has in every game. The big play (37 yard TD pass to Lance Kendricks to tie the game) is the one that jumps out at you and that’s a situation he’s rarely in, one on one outside, and they go after you, so… he could have played better.”
“The DB’s were the first ones to him (after it the TD play). Everybody has plays where they get beat and it’s part of that position, being able to bounce back. They helped him immediately and took care of him.”
ON THE TEAM’S PERFORMANCE IN THE RED ZONE:
“Not good enough. One out of four on touchdowns, that’s not as good as we want to be. We also got knocked out of a couple field goal opportunites too when we were right there on the fringe and didn’t get it. We need to do better there and we anticipate that we will.”
ON TAVON AUSTIN’S PUNT RETURN TD:
“We got out of our lane’s and got blocked a little bit at the line of scrimmage, they (the Rams) did a interesting job of getting after Ricardo Lockett, they went after him with 3 guys and set up the return that way. We’ve had great coverage, and had a lot of confidence that we’re going to get that done properly, but on this one the right side of our covereage team got collapsed down and he (Austin) took off and he’s really tough to get once he gets rolling.”
ON WHETHER KAM CHANCELLOR’S ABSENCE WAS THE REASON FOR THE SECONDARY GIVING UP MORE BIG PLAYS THAN USUAL:
“Not particularly.”
ON KAM CHANCELLOR’S CONTINUED HOLDOUT:
“Nothing new.”
