From starter to unemployed: Seattle Seahawks cut Dion Bailey
By Keith Myers
This has been a tough month for Dion Bailey. After giving up the long touchdown that cost the Seahawks a win in St. Louis, he found himself benched for Week 2. Now he’s unemployed before Week 3’s game even begins. The Seattle Seahawks waived Bailey on Saturday.
The Seahawks needed to clear a roster spot for return of Kam Chancellor. That we knew, but I don’t think anyone expected Bailey to be the man to draw the short straw here.
The smart money appeared to be on fellow safety Steven Terrell to head to injured reserve to free up that roster spot. Terrell has an injured hip flexor and isn’t expected to play for a few weeks. He also isn’t a player that has ever shown to be more than just another guy.
Another option would have been to cut FB Will Tukuafu. The Seahawks rarely use a FB on offense, so keeping two on the roster has never made much sense. This is especially true considering that Tukuafu has been a healthy inactive for both of Seattle’s games this year.
Neither of those moves would have been a surprise, but cutting Bailey certainly was surprising. Bailey has flashed big-time potential at times. He may be undersized, but he’s shown the potential be a solid backup.
Bailey played very well in training camp, which is why he was able to win the starting job for Week 1 over DeShawn Shead. Bailey hits like a Seahawk, even if wasn’t always as sticky as you’d want him to be in coverage.
Now the Seahawks have to hope that Bailey passes through waivers so that he can land on the practice squad. With they hype surrounding him in training camp, the probability of that happening doesn’t appear to be all that high. Keep in mind that there are teams, like the Giants, that are still searching for help at safety.
