Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was the first overall selection in the 2016 Pro Bowl Draft.

Finally, Russell Wilson was drafted as high as he should have been.

The third round pick in the 2012 NFL draft was the first overall pick today by Michael Irvin as he and Jerry Rice divvy up all the talent on hand for the annual all star contest.

More from Seattle Seahawks News

Wilson was named to the Pro Bowl after his best statistical season as a pro, as he passed for over 4,000 yards with 34 TD’s to only 8 interceptions. He finished the season as the highest rated passer in the league, and had a historically prolific five game stretch in which he threw 19 touchdown passes with no INT’s.

This is the first opportunity Wilson has had to play in the Pro Bowl since 2013, as the Seahawks have been in the Super Bowl the last two seasons. Following his rookie year, Wilson threw 3 TD passes in his first all star appearance, and his style of play suits the format of the game perfectly; his ability to scramble in a game that has basically become patty-cake style touch football likely is what led Irvin to make him the first overall choice.

New York Giants QB Eli Manning was the first selection for Team Rice. Irvin’s second choice was Atlanta wide receiver Julio Jones, giving Wilson a big time receiving target.

The draft is continuing throughout the evening. In all, seven Seahawks were named to the game, including Michael Bennett, Bobby Wanger, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas and Tyler Lockett. Safety Kam Chancellor was also voted to the event, but declined to play.
