Should the Seahawks bring back Matt Hasselbeck?

Matt Hasselbeck is going to be on the market. The Seattle Seahawks need a backup QB, and their former star at the position would be an interesting fit.

According to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Silver, the Indianapolis Colts will not be bringing back quarterback Matt Hasselbeck next season.

So that means Hasselbeck is going to be a free agent. The Seahawks need a backup QB. Lets go ahead and connect those dots, shall we?

For starters, Hasselbeck showed some life last season when asked to start for the injured Andrew Luck in Indy. As hard as it is to believe, he actually outplayed Luck overall, even though he had to battle through some tough injuries just to get one the field.

Then again, outplaying Luck last season isn’t a good barometer for excellence. Luck was fairly awful. Compared to the rest of the league, Hasselbeck was a bit below average.

He’s also 40, and will have to learn a completely new offense in Seattle. The system he played in back in 2010 is long gone. Few players are willing to start over learning a new system at his age.

What Matt brings to the table for the Seahawks is an incredible football brain. When he was Seattle’s starter, he was widely considered the smartest QB in the league.

Given Wilson’s meticulous nature in studying film, the pair would likely feed off each other. The pairing would be great for Wilson, who is already one of the league’s best players at the position.

If Hasselbeck decides to retire, which is a definite possibility, I hope he does so as a Seahawk. Sign him to a 1-day contract, and let him go out wearing Seahawks colors.
