The LA Rams and head coach Jeff Fisher are working on a contract extension. That’ll ensure that the NFC West remains a two-team race.

According to a report from ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, the LA Rams and head coach Jeff Fisher are working on a contract. How Fisher has managed to secure such job security is a complete mystery.

From what I can ascertain, Rams fans hate this report. I can’t say that I blame them. Fisher has been the very definition of mediocrity throughout his 21 year coaching career.

Lets look at some highlights from his coaching ineptness:

  • Has finished with a record above .500 in just 6 of 21 years as a head coach.
  • Has not made the playoffs since 2008
  • Won at least 1 playoff game in just 3 of 21 seasons
  • Only 5 career playoff wins, three of those came in 1 season (1999)

Fisher’s teams haven’t won a playoff game since 2003. That more than a decade of futility, and yet it seems taboo to question him on his lack of success.

Here’s another way to think of it: The Seattle Supersonics, a team that hasn’t existed in what feels like forever, has won a playoff series more recently than Fisher has won a playoff game.

Looking at his time with the Rams, he’s been even worse. His record with the Rams is only 27-36-1 in four seasons, and they’ve never finished with more than 7 wins in any season.

The Rams won 8 and 6 games the two seasons prior to Fishers arrival. Since he joined them, they’ve won 7, 7, 6, and 7 games. There’s simply been no improvement.

For comparisons: Pete Carroll won a Super Bowl in his fourth season in Seattle. Four years is plenty of time to turn a team around.

Perhaps the most damning evidence again Jeff Fisher would be that the team has drafted well recently. They’ve added the Defensive Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year winners in the last two seasons, but have not been able to translate all that added talent into wins.

No matter how you look at it, Jeff Fisher is a mediocre coach. The Rams signing him to an extension is definitely a positive development for the Seahawks.
