10 free agents that make sense for the Seahawks
By Dan Viens
Colt McCoy, QB, Washington Redskins
It sounds as if Tarvaris Jackson will be moving on, so the Seahawks are in the market for a new backup QB. Would they want to entrust a rookie draft pick with being Wilson’s sub in the event of a significant injury? Unlikely. As usual, the free agent quarterback pickings are slim, but you can forget about the RGIII talk. He’s going to sign with a team that gives him at least an outside shot of earning some playing time in the near future. Seattle is not that team.
McCoy has had his shots as a starter in both Cleveland and Washington. Now, he’s likely resigned to the fact he needs to plan on being a #2 for someone the rest of his career. Not a bad career choice. You get paid well, have no pressure on you, and if you’re playing for a contender you might have a chance to do something heroic should the starter go down. Seattle would make sense as a choice for McCoy.
From the other side, Pete Carroll and his staff attended McCoy’s pro day when he came out of Texas, and his personality, competitiveness and leadership style would mesh perfectly with Wilson. And he’s talented enough to minimize the drop off should Wilson go down, while also mobile enough to run the same play book. At just 29 years old, McCoy could make sense as a long-term backup QB in Seattle to replace Jackson.
Trying to predict NFL free agency, and in particular what the Seahawks are going to do, is a dicey proposition. What do you think of this list? Follow us and comment on Twitter (@12thman_rising, @SeahawksForever) and facebook, or leave a comment here.
This is when rosters really begin to change and take shape prior to the draft. Expect some surprises from the Hawks. They always seem to come up with something we’re not expecting this time of year.
