With the NFL Draft less than a month away, we take an up-close look at some prospects who might fit well with the Seattle Seahawks.

The NFL Draft is fast approaching and teams all around the NFL are working furiously to put together their draft boards. For the Seahawks, this is a crucial year for GM John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll. The last couple of drafts have produced more depth than superstars, but with their high-priced young core now causing annual salary cap constraints, they find themselves needing to hit on a couple starter-quality players this time around.

So let’s take a look at some players who may appear to be a fit in Seattle, regardless of round.

JOSHUA GARNETT, OG, Stanford

SPECS:

  • Height – 6’4″
  • Weight – 312 lbs
  • Arms – 33 7/8″
  • 40 yard dash – 5.32

STRENGTHS:

Garnett’s strength is his……strength. He’s extremely powerful in the running game, exploding out of his stance and destroying most defenders. The All-American and Outland Trophy winner is also known as a locker room leader (he was voted as a team captain) but nasty on the field.

WEAKNESSES:

Not as adept in pass protection as he is in the rushing game. Needs some refinement on technique.

HOW HE WOULD FIT WITH THE SEAHAWKS:

Seahawks fans might recognize the name, as Garnett starred at Puyallup High School before heading to Stanford. His size and power would make him appear to be a fit for left guard, where the Hawks like their guards quite a bit bigger than on the right side. In fact, Garnett in some ways reminds of former Hawk lineman James Carpenter.

The Seahawks have said they’re happy with Justin Britt at right guard and expect him to take a step forward this season. However, they’ve also pointed out the need to get more physical up front on offense. Garnett’s combination of being a leader and being in possession of a nasty streak sounds precisely like the type of player Seahawks coaches covet. Perhaps that’s why he’s been a pre-draft visitor to the VMAC already.
