Seahawks still without a backup QB
By Keith Myers
The Seattle Seahawks are still without a backup QB, and time to get a good one slowly is ticking away.
Free agency is over, and the NFL draft is approaching. While everyone (especially me) seems to be focussing on the offensive line, there is another whole on the roster that isn’t getting the attention it deserves.
The backup QB spot isn’t one that’ll generate ratings of drive internet page views, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t important. Just ask the Dallas Cowboys from last year what happens when a starting QB goes down without a viable backup. Conversely, look at what Denver was able to do because they had a decent backup who could carry the load.
For the past three seasons the backup in Seattle has been Tarvaris Jackson. Jackson has admitted that he wants to play for a team where he is more likely to see the field. It is hard to blame him, since he now old enough that he isn’t likely to get many more chances.
Ideally, Seattle would want to find a similar veteran to replace Jackson. Unfortunately, there aren’t many of those left on the market right now. Unless someone Brian Hoyer or Geno Smith is released in the coming weeks, the plan will likely end up being Jackson or some rookie manning the job this year.
Let’s face it, it doesn’t matter who the rookie is, they won’t be ready to help much if Wilson does down. Despite having one of the best rookie seasons ever, Wilson was still pretty bad for the first six weeks. Seattle won’t be drafting a QB high enough to get someone even close to Wilson’s talent.

The Seahawks have been fortunate that Russell Wilson has never missed a start in his career. Considering how bad the pass blocking has been for most of his tenure, that is actually a fairly spectacular feat.
Banking on that to continue isn’t a safe bet. There are very few Brett Farves in NFL history. Every QB suffers and injuries here and there. If a team isn’t prepared, those injuries can derail a entire season.
