3-27 (90th overall): Halapoulivaati Vaitai, OT, TCU

Last time I mocked Paul Perkins here, and I still love his game, but I think Seattle will be happy grabbing a running back later. Vaitai projects perfectly as a right tackle to compete with J’Marcus Webb. I’ve seen projections vary from the 3rd round all the way to the 7th round so Seattle grabbing him at the early end of the projections just seems right. Vaitai possesses the requisite explosiveness and demeanor Tom Cable covets.

Alternate: Willie Henry, DT, Michigan.

I keep projecting defensive linemen with my alternate picks, which reflects the depth at the position. Henry is young (just turned 21) and possesses an intriguing mix of athleticism and awareness. I think he could develop into a starter quality defensive lineman capable of playing inside on early downs and kicking to the edge on third down.

3-Comp (97th overall): Tyler Ervin, RB, San Jose State

Reportedly, Seattle looked pretty hard at Ervin at his pro day which is interesting because he doesn’t fit Pete Carroll’s recent RB mold. At 5’9” and 190 pounds, he’s a couple inches shorter and about 25 pounds lighter than their usual running backs. Perhaps Seattle is going back to a faster, shiftier pass catcher as a 3rd down back like they had in Leon Washington or Justin Forsett in the past?

Although small in stature, Ervin is dynamic and was very productive in college similar to Tyler Lockett. Ervin has value as a pass catcher, runner, and kick returner. Maybe he could project to the role Pete Carroll envisioned for Percy Harvin before that went up in flames?

Alternate: Jonathan Williams, RB, Arkansas.

I should probably have put Williams as my primary projection because I just love his game. He may have been a top running back prospect had he come out last year, but after a foot injury cost him this entire season his draft stock is somewhat depressed. In watching his 2014 tape I couldn’t help but see shades of Marshawn Lynch. I know, its too soon for comparisons to Beastmode but the way Williams makes people miss and miraculously breaks tackles is strikingly similar. Make this happen PCJS!
