The Seattle Seahawks selected Alabama defensive tackle Jarran Reed after trading up in the 2nd round of today’s NFL Draft.

“I can tell you right now, the Seahawks have a player coming!”

That’s what Jarran Reed said right after the Seahawks moved up 7 spots in the 2nd round to select him with the 49th pick overall.

HOW HE FITS WITH THE SEAHAWKS:

Reed projects best at the nose, and profiles as a similar player to Brandon Mebane, who left for San Diego this offseason as a free agent. NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah had him rated as his #13 player OVERALL and said he “dominates against the run.”

And from his nfl.com draft profile:  “Two-gap machine who can eat blocks and come back for more. Rarely beaten at point of attack by single blocks. As an edge setter, grows roots and prevents running lanes from developing in gaps.  Run down specialist posting tremendous two-year production with 108 tackles despite playing in only 55 percent of the total snaps. Charted with no broken tackles or missed tackles for the entire season.”

As for his weaknesses, he’s knocked for not being a pass rusher at all. But the Seahawks won’t ask him to be. He’ll be a two-down player who stiffens their rushing defense, taking up blockers while Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril, Frank Clark et al get after the passer.

He also had a DUI in 2014. The Seahawks say they looked into it and are satisfied it was dealt with properly and is not a long-term concern.

We’ve heard for weeks how deep this draft is, particularly in rounds 2-4. Reed was widely considered as a first round lock. To get him at #49, without having to sacrifice any of their 3 3rd rounds picks, was a coup for Seattle. Reed should be a front 7 mainstay at CenturyLink Field for years to come.
