My Seahawks shadow draft, 2016 edition
By Dan Viens
SEVENTH ROUND, 247TH PICK OVERALL:
Seahawks took – Zac Brooks, RB, Clemson
I took – Jay Lee, WR, Baylor
Seriously, THREE running backs? I knew there was interest in Brooks, as he was another VMAC visitor. But wouldn’t he have been available as an UDFA just a few picks later? At least we were both thinking late round receiver. And Lee, who got lost in the shadow of first round teammate Corey Coleman, was similar in size while being faster than Lawler. He went undrafted and was signed by the Lions.
SUMMARY:
So all told, the Seahawks and I both took 3 offensive linemen and 2 defensive linemen. We both took a WR and I got the Vannett pick right. What skewed the comparison was the three running backs instead of the 2 linebackers I took along with Cash at safety.
Who had the better draft? Based on talent alone, Schneider certainly schooled me. He took a bunch of higher upside players while mine may have been a bit on the safer side. Day vs. Jefferson will be interesting to watch in the future, as will Clark vs. Ifedi, Lawler vs. Lee and Hunt vs. Allen. The performance of the three RB’s vs. the linebackers in my draft will also be worth watching. I kept wanting to take a RB, but there was always a player I liked better at another position of need. I also thought there would be a decent group to choose from out of the undrafted guys, with some veteran cuts coming soon as well.
Next: Is Kenny Lawler Sidney Rice 2.0??
For my first shadow draft, I think I ended up with a nice group of prospects while filling a bunch of holes. But as a Seahawk fan, I am certainly glad Schneider took the guys he did instead of my choices.
It’ll be fun to look back and compare in a couple years. It will also be interesting for Keith and I to compare our at that time.
