Seahawks roster battle: offensive line
By David Stobbe
The offensive line is going to play a huge factor in the Seattle Seahawks’ performance during the 2016 season. The struggles from last season are well documented, and this year looks to be different with added competition at every spot.
With additions in free agency, the draft, plus some players in-house making positive strides, the offensive line line should be much improved this season. Keep in mind that there are still 1 or 2 UDFAs that will be added to the offensive line, which haven’t been included. Let’s take a look at the position battles on the current offensive line and how it might shake out during training camp.
Left Tackle:
Starter: Garry Gilliam
Gilliam looks to be the favorite to win the starting job right now. He played well as a right tackle last season, and improved throughout the year in only his first season as a starter. Gilliam is a very athletic player and will be able to keep up on the left side with the fast defensive ends rushing the quarterback.
Backup: Bradley Sowell
Sowell came from the Arizona Cardinals in free agency and has experience in the NFL, having played for 4 seasons and starting 12 games at left tackle. He struggled during those starts, but keep in mind that was only in his 2nd season as a pro. Sowell was highly valued as a backup with the Cardinals and will bring tough competition against Gilliam.
Roster Cut: Kona Schwenke
Schwenke was brought in last season during the Seahawks’ rookie mini camp, converting from defensive line to offensive line. He is definitely a project and won’t factor in much to the competition. Schwenke might be an option on the practice squad this season, but will most likely just be an extra body in camp.
