Justin Britt is moving to center. This is the latest attempt to find a role where the second round bust can contribute for the Seattle Seahawks.

There’s trying to force a square peg into a round hole, and then there’s trying to find a position where Justin Britt is a competent player. After terrible seasons as a starter at right tackle and left guard, the disappointing second round pick is now moving to center.

Pete Carroll did his best to sell the move this last week, but I’m not sure anyone is buying what he’s selling.

The Seahawks drafted Justin Britt to be the team’s long-term right tackle. The team said so at the time. Their actions showed it as well. The only moved him inside to guard when he showed that a full year in the NFL and Seattle’s zone blocking system generated no improvement.

The problem was that he was actually worse at guard. His slow feet and poor technique weren’t hidden on the inside the way the team hoped they would be. The was arguably the worst guard in the NFL last season, and his issues weren’t going to go away.

With Glowinski and Ifedi set to take over the starting jobs at the two guard spots, Britt will now move to center as the team tries to find a role where he can contribute. His strength and knowledge of the system will be an asset at center, but his lack of quickness will hold him back as well.

Britt now seems destined to be a career backup that can play multiple positions. There’s value in that, but it is clear that he’s a bust for a second round pick. There are only so many things the team can try to justify his spot on the roster.
