Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says QB Russell Wilson’s sprained ankle shouldn’t be bad enough to keep him out of this week’s game in Los Angeles.

When Russell Wilson came up gimpy with a sprained right ankle during the Seahawks 12-10 win over Miami yesterday, it sent waves of panic all throughout the Pacific Northwest. When he showed up at a local restaurant later that night with a boot on, some fans feared the worst.

Then this morning, there were some ominous reports that Wilson’s injury could be worse than any of us had hoped.

But by this afternoon, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was sounding a bit more optimistic:

All of this makes it likely that Wednesday’s team practice at the VMAC facility in Renton will be one of the most-watched and highly scrutinized practices in years. Wilson hasn’t just played in every game since being drafted in 2012, he’s never even missed a practice.

All of this brings into greater focus the decision by Carroll and GM John Schneider to go with undrafted rookie Trevone Boykin out of TCU as Wilson’s lone backup this season. After Wilson got up gimpy on Sunday, Boykin had his helmet on and was warming up. Would he have been ready to step in and perform at a high level? Thankfully we didn’t have to find out. After Wilson had his ankle re-wrapped by trainers he came back in the game and led the game-winning TD drive to finish the Dolphins off.

Regardless of how well Wilson heals, and how good he looks Wednesday, expect the possibility of the team adding an extra layer of insurance before then:

Not that there are a lot of attractive options out on the street. Names like Michael Vick, TJ Yates and Josh Johnson have been thrown around. Boykin would probably still be the backup, with the new vet simply there as emergency insurance should Wilson have any setbacks.
