The Seattle Seahawks are in the market for a veteran running back, but the reasons the want one probably aren’t what you are expecting.

If there is one thing that is certain about the Seattle Seahawks this offseason, it is that they are set on adding a free agent running back. Every big-name veteran back has now visited with the Seahawks, and one will likely sign at some point.

It all started with the inexplicable interest in what is left of Adrian Peterson. Then came word that Jamaal Charles was possibly coming to town. Now there is this:

And the similar but not complete agreement of this one.

So while we aren’t exactly sure when Lacy’s visit began, we know that he was in town. It is obvious that the Seahawks are hitting the RB market hard. They clearly want to a veteran to add to the position group.

This is more than just wanting an injury hedge in case CJ Prosise or Thomas Rawls gets hurt again.  If that was the case, the team wouldn’t be interested in the off-injured Charles. They could also get an injury-hedge in the draft.

Instead, this is about leadership. The Seahawks realized over the course of last season that they needed a veteran presence inside the RB room.

In 2015 the Seahawks had both Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson to help Thomas Rawls. Last year the only veteran they had was Christine Michael. It is pretty clear that ended up being sub-optimal.

For 2017, the Seahawks will also be without longtime RB coach Sherman Smith. Smith retired, leaving an even larger leadership void inside the RB room.

Of course, it would also help if the veteran the Seahawks sign is capable of contributing as well. It seems the everyone has their own opinion on which of these back will be best for that.
