Could the Browns Be The Place to Trade Sherman?
By Lee Vowell
Would Sherman to the Cleveland Browns be Worthy?
The Browns currently have the first and twelfth picks in 2017 draft. If Seattle were to ask for Joe Thomas and that 12th pick in the draft from the Browns for Richard Sherman, would that make sense? The Browns seemingly want to improve faster than slower. They have extended Jamie Collins for four years. They have Joe Haden at one corner. The Browns have shown an inclination to build through defense rather than offense.
I used to live in Cleveland in the late 1990s. They were crap then and they are crap now. The current ownership of Jimmy Haslam has no clue how to run a team. Haslam’s one defining attachment is that he is a University of Tennessee graduate just as Peyton Manning is. Haslam feels that because he knows Manning, he knows football. He does not. This could help Seattle.
My idea is not for the Seahawks to trade for Haden, but for Joe Thomas and then to get that 12th draft pick. Sherman’s cap hit in 2017 is $13.631 million and in 2018 is $13.2 million. Thomas’s cap hit is $11.5 million in 2017 and $10 million in 2018. If the Seahawks were to trade straight up, Seattle would save money. The Browns would still have plenty of cap space. Seattle could trade for the Browns high pick as well as Thomas. Seattle could possibly take a corner with potential and athleticism at number 12. Long-term this could make the Seahawks contenders for several seasons.
Thomas makes the Seahawks better at a position of need.
Age is a Factor
Though Thomas is aging, his age is equal to Sherman at Sherman’s position. Offensive linemen can play productively longer than cornerbacks. Thomas will be 32 the entire season of 2017. Sherman will be 29 years old. In three years, Thomas could still be a solid player at his current position. Sherman will be an old man at his in three seasons.
If Seattle trades to Cleveland, the Seahawks will possibly be able to grab an excellent corner and a potentially great offensive lineman in the first round. Will Seattle miss Sherman in 2017? Yes. In 2020 could the Seahawks potentially be better than if they still had Sherman? Could Seattle’s window of opportunity to win a Super Bowl be longer? Yes.
Maybe Sherman would veto a trade to Cleveland. Maybe Cleveland could say, “If you come here, we will rework your contract and pay you more.” Anything is possible.
And as Al Davis once said, “Just win, baby.”
