Seahawks begin voluntary Phase One workouts this week

On Tuesday, Seattle will begin Phase One of three offseason workouts in preparation for the 2017 season. Phase One is limited to strength, conditioning and rehab activities and is only two weeks long. In fact, only strength and conditioning coaches are allowed on the field during these two weeks. So, if you are planning to go to Renton to check out early workouts, you will not see much. Plus, fans are not permitted to view offseason workouts.

Each team can specify only two hours a day for players to be at the team’s training facility. There is a maximum of four hours a day that players would need to be at the facility. Two of those hours can be used solely for lifting weights and other conditioning drills.

Phase One is simply voluntary

Phase Two will be the organized team activities (OTAs) that will take place beginning May 30th for the Seahawks. This phase will also occur on June 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th. During this phase, teams still cannot have contact drills but instead will have individual player instruction. Teams can also hold offensive and defensive practices separately but cannot have drills where the offense plays directly against the defense.

Phase Three is mandatory minicamp. The Seahawks will hold their camp between June 13-15. Again, in Phase Three teams cannot have players hit each other but 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills are allowed.

The Seahawks lost a week of OTAs this year due to excessive contact in offseason workouts last year.

All offseason team activities are regulated by the collective bargaining agreement voted on by the players and agreed to by the owners.

Usually, the only true drama is which player suddenly decides not to show for the mandatory minicamp. Hopefully, this season all Seahawks will show with a smile on their face and happiness in their hearts.
