The Seahawks have four picks in round three of the NFL draft; these picks need to be starters long-term

The Seahawks took an offensive lineman and a defensive lineman with their first two picks in the 2017 draft. With their first pick in the third round Seattle chose cornerback Shaquill Griffin. Griffin is a good tackler and has decent size. He is not necessarily as tall as the Seahawks normally like, but at 6’1″ he is not small. Walter Football said that he showed good speed during the combine. Walter Football did have Griffin only ranked as their 20th best cornerback in the draft, however.

It is clear that Seattle is drafting for need in this draft. The three main areas of need coming into the draft for Seattle were cornerback, DT and OL. With the first three picks in the draft, the Seahawks tried to address each of those needs. The question with Griffin is how quickly he can help.

The Seahawks are in dire need at the cornerback position opposite Richard Sherman. Griffin has speed and size. He does not have good experience against top level players in college, however. Griffin played at Central Florida. He was not projected to go until the fourth round at the earliest. Whether the Seahawks overreached for Griffin will not be known until well into the 2017 season. Seattle cannot afford to waste any picks in this draft, though. The core is aging, especially in the secondary. Griffin will be expected to fill an immediate need and also continue to be good for several years to come. That includes becoming something close to Richard Sherman.
