Eddie Lacy passes first weight test

Lacy has several weight clauses in his one-year deal with Seattle. The first one said if Lacy came in under 255 pounds at his May weigh-in he would gain $55,000. Tonight, Lacy can use that money to buy some excellent, if low-cal, Seattle cuisine because Lacy came in at 253 pounds. This is a positive sign for the Seahawks. This means Lacy is taking his contract stipulations seriously and appears focused on having a successful 2017 campaign.

Lacy, of course, drove the Green Bay Packers mad with the shape he maintained. The Seahawks and Pete Carroll want Lacy a little bigger, however. The weight that the Packers wanted Lacy to be, typically around 235 pounds, may not have been realistic. Lacy is a big dude for a running back. The Seahawks need his size. Still, Seattle is hoping for Lacy to become a little lighter.

Lacy will have a bunch more chances to earn $55,000. If he weighs-in in June and August at 250 pounds, that is money for each month. During each month of the regular season, September through December, Lacy needs to be a consistent 245. Were Lacy to meet his goal for each month of his current contract, he would gain a total of $385,000. That is a lot of incentive.

Lacy beyond 2017

Best case for both running back and team, though, is for Lacy to always be in control of his weight. Seattle, though they have Thomas Rawls and C.J. Prosise, would most likely prefer a running back of Lacy’s size and ability to be their featured back. If Lacy can have a good 2017, chances are Seattle will make every effort to sign him to longer-term deal. He is young enough to be able to be a featured back for several more seasons.

This would, of course, mean that Rawls would not have a long Seattle career. Same for Alex Collins. Prosise is talented and versatile enough to be with the Seahawks for some time. All Lacy has to do to become the next Marshawn Lynch – a welcome addition in Seattle after his previous team stopped liking him as much – is to maintain weight. And stay healthy. And be productive. Etc., etc.
